Why are streams reported on a 24 hour delay inside Spotify For Artists?
This is a question that’s asked all the time, but is rarely answered.
As we know by now, when you release a record on Spotify the streams are reported “live” inside Spotify For Artists for the first seven days. Once the week is up, the reporting reverts to the standard 24 hour delay.
But, why?
Spotify reports streams inside Spotify For Artists (and the desktop client) on a 24 hour delay to detect and prevent streaming manipulation.
They call this filtering.
BTS’s “Butter” release was a great example of this strategy in action. When “Butter” was released, Spotify reduced its first day streams (which amounted to ~ 20M) by 50% based on their closely guarded formula.
According to industry insiders, only the first 10 plays of a track by each user on the platform are chart-eligible within each 24 hour period.
